🔹 Introduction

A two-stroke engine is a type of internal combustion engine that completes one power cycle in just two strokes of the piston—one upward and one downward movement. These engines are commonly used in motorcycles, scooters, chainsaws, and small power tools because of their lightweight design, high power output, and simple construction.

⚙️ Main Parts of a Two Stroke Engine

  1. Cylinder – It is the main body of the engine where fuel combustion takes place.
  2. Piston – A moving part that compresses the air-fuel mixture and transfers power to the crankshaft.
  3. Spark Plug – Produces the spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture.
  4. Crankcase – Houses the crankshaft and helps in fuel mixture compression.
  5. Inlet Port – Allows the air-fuel mixture to enter the crankcase.
  6. Transfer Port – Transfers the mixture from the crankcase to the combustion chamber.
  7. Exhaust Port – Removes the burnt gases from the cylinder after combustion.
  8. Crankshaft – Converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion.
  9. Connecting Rod – Connects the piston to the crankshaft.
  10. Carburetor – Mixes air and fuel in the correct ratio for combustion.

🔄 Working of a Two Stroke Engine

A two-stroke engine completes one power cycle in two strokes of the piston—that means one revolution of the crankshaft.

🔸 1. Upward Stroke (Compression Stroke)

  • The piston moves upward, compressing the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
  • At the same time, a new mixture enters the crankcase through the inlet port.
  • When the piston reaches the top, the spark plug ignites the mixture.

🔸 2. Downward Stroke (Power Stroke)

  • The burnt gases expand, pushing the piston downward to produce power.
  • During this movement, the exhaust port opens to release burnt gases.
  • The transfer port opens, allowing fresh mixture from the crankcase into the cylinder.
  • The cycle repeats continuously, giving one power stroke per revolution, which makes it more powerful than a four-stroke engine of the same size.

⚠️ Disadvantages of Two Stroke Engine

❌ Not environmentally friendly

  • Lawn mowers
  • Chainsaws
